COMMUNITY ORGANIZING
Building Community. Growing Leaders.
CHLDC has been a backbone organization and change agent in East New York and New York City. CHLDC engages in targeted advocacy efforts, both through our work with tenants to organize for better conditions in their buildings and to challenge unlawful evictions and tenant harassment, and through community-wide organizing efforts to advocate for safe, affordable housing, tenant protections against displacement, living-wage jobs and better services to our community.
In 2015, CHLDC joined The Coalition for Community Advancement: Progress for Cypress Hills and East New York. The Coalition is a group of community and civic organizations, small businesses, houses of worship and local citizens. Today, we serve as one of the Coalition’s leading voices, advocating and mobilizing the local community. One of the Coalition’s goals is to preserve affordable housing in East New York and ensure that the rezoning brings community benefits to the area in the form of affordable housing, jobs, and dedicated community spaces and resources. These activities support CHLDC’s mission of making Cypress Hills and East New York a place where residents secure affordable housing.

East New York Rezone
East New York, including Cypress Hills, is in the process of being rezoned. Rezoning means that the laws and regulations about what kind of buildings can be built, and where, are going to change in our neighborhood. In several years, it is likely that Cypress Hills will look noticeably different than it does today, with taller buildings and more people.
In order to advocate for a fair and just rezoning process, CHLDC joined the Coalition for Community Advancement: Progress for Cypress Hills and East New York with other community and civic organizations, small businesses, houses of worship and local citizens. Since its founding in 2015, the Coalition has advocated tirelessly and mobilized the community to advocate for safe, affordable housing, tenant protections against displacement, living-wage jobs and better services to our community.
The Coalition authored a plan for East New York rezoning efforts during the beginning stages of the rezoning process. Read our comprehensive action plan here!
Cease and Desist Campaign: ¡NUESTRA COMMUNIDAD NO SE VENDE!
Are you tired of getting phone calls, texts, knocks on your door with offers to buy your house?
Do you ever feel harassed by brokers or agents?
Do you know someone who has been scammed?
House flipping is on the rise in East New York and Cypress Hills. Flipping targets vulnerable homeowners (those at risk of foreclosure, who owe tax and water debt to the city, and seniors) and puts homes out of reach of working- and middle-class buyers, while also depleting affordable rental units! We need to protect homeowners and tenants and ensure affordable homeownership in East New York and Cypress Hills for years to come!
The Coalition for Community Advancement is kicking off a Cease and Desist Campaign. A Cease and Desist Zone would allow residents to opt-in to a “do not solicit” registry, speculators who contact homeowners on the list with offers to buy home will face violations. In order to get a Cease and Desist zone for East New York and Cypress, we must present evidence of speculative activity to the State. We need residents to fill out a six-question survey online or in person. Fill out survey here!
